I had to try that granny stitch hexagon cardigan for myself!

I love how it turned out!

Basic Granny Hexagon Cardigan Pattern:

  1. Make a Magic Ring and chain 3 (counts as 1st double crochet) and then double crochet into the ring 5 times. Join the last stitch to the first with a slip stitch and chain 3. I use this method when using chunky yarn and/or large hooks. It provides a bit of gentle curve into the sleeve as opposed to the hard right angle that you get when making a total of 18 double crochets into the magic ring and skipping step #2) 
  2. Make 3 double crochet stitches in each of the next 5 spaces. Make 2 double crochets in the next space (where the chain 3 should be) to complete the final GCl for this round. You should have 6 clusters of 3 double crochets (6 GCl = 6 granny clusters). Join the last stitch to the first with a slip stitch and chain 3.
  3. Make 2 DC (2 double crochet stitches), ch 2 (chain 2), and 3 DC (3 double crochet stitches) in the same space that you made the chain 3. For the remaining 5 spaces make 3DC, ch2, and 3DC in each space. Join to the first stitch and chain 3 (with the new color if you are changing colors at this point).

  • Continue in the pattern until the width of one of the sides of the hexagons can either (1) cover your back fully or (2) wrap around an arm completely and comfortably.
  • At this point you will either need to add length to the arm or to the back and/or to the length. Personally, I like my arms kinda poofy, so I keep going until I am happy with the back and then I decrease the arms down a bit to make a poof.
  • Make 2 of these hexagons and then join them.
    4. Fold the hexagons to form 1/2 of a cardigan.

    5. Stitch together the arms using the method of your choice.

    6. Stitch the 2 halves together in back using the method of your choice.

    7. Add onto the length of the sleeve or the length of the cardigan as you wish.

    8. Weave in any ends, wash, and block.


I love these crochet hooks because I can use them at the movies, on a plane (even when it is dark) and even in bed while my spouse sleeps!
